“We
even found it an advantage when securing a competitive premium...”
Founded in 1999, Stainless Pipeline Supplies is a stockholder for the stainless steel industry, carrying a full range of materials – i.e. tubes, fittings, valves, flanges, angle, flat, rounds, rectangular section, sheet and plate 304/316 and handrail accessories – for the brewing, dairy, chemical and petroleum industries within Ireland and the UK.
When SPS moved to new premises in Kells, County Meath, last year they already had systems in place to track and record all products and could supply test certificates for everything that went out the door. As far as the 10-strong workforce was concerned, obtaining ISO certification was the next logical step to provide the evidence to support the quality management systems they had established. In June 2003, the company was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification.
Jonathan Kavanagh, who was responsible for implementing ISO, found that IMSM helped make the whole process smooth and easy. He told Quest, “Having already prepared our own ISO manual, I then worked closely with Assessor, Peter Basley, to ensure that our procedures met ISO’s exacting standards. Peter was most helpful, advising on any aspects that we had overlooked in order to make our existing systems more efficient. For example, he enabled us to save time and resources by recommending a documentation system for our training records. They now only have to be created once and can be continually added to, whereas before we simply prepared a new document each time.
Jonathan continued, “Carrying out so many improvements to systems and safety aspects in order to achieve ISO certification has proved beneficial in many ways. We even found it an advantage when securing a competitive premium for building and personal injury insurance. When the time comes for our annual audit in June, it will be a challenge to pin-point areas for further improvement.”
