Tough and green!

Rhino Asphalt Solutions are specialist highway maintenance contractors, applying 21st century skills and international experience to the increasingly complex world of road maintenance. With many councils as clients, they have already demonstrated that they are a committed quality organisation, with ISO 9001:2000 certification from QAS International. Now they have gone further, and achieved certification of the company's environmental management system to the best practice standard, ISO 14001:2004.

The company has recently introduced a new product, Readymac, a pothole repair system, which has significant environmental and cost advantages. Readymac uses more than 90% recycled road planings, as well as being a cold-mix asphalt, which requires less than 1% of the energy used by conventional methods.

Implementing ISO 14001 seemed the way to demonstrate this commitment to their customers. Karen Brown, QMS manager, says that everyone at Rhino is involved

"Working with Bill Davis, the IMSM assessor, made the process of getting ready for certification easy and not too time consuming. He helped us to look at both products and processes, and helped identify measurements of our inputs and outputs that affect the environment," said Karen. "We now feel that we can control our impacts much more effectively than before. It has also made it far easier to demonstrate compliance with the many environmental regulations our industry is faced with."

Having ISO 9001:2000 already in place makes integrating other ISO-style management system standards much easier. Rhino Asphalt is in the process of incorporating OHSAS 18001:1999 into their overall systems to deal with the complex area of Health & Safety.
