Since meeting Scott Mersch, Executive Vice President, Bill Macleod has referred IMSM to several other companies. he told us: “Our Assessor, Ian Farquharson, made it simple to continue on to the new spec. The hardest part was figuring out what we wanted to measure and how to assess continual improvement. We asked Ian for help, and he told us that we were already measuring continual improvement by statistically comparing the number of parts shipped against the number returned, all we had to do was set a goal.
“The new spec is a lot better than the old. Not that there’s any more work (if you’re smart about it, there isn’t, and you can always ask IMSM for help), but because it gives you more tools to measure your own performance, and that of your vendors. Before, there was no prescribed way of gauging customer satisfaction. With the new spec we’re sending out surveys. The data collected from these surveys makes it easy to set goals for improving customer satisfaction.”
He continued: “Perhaps the biggest benefit to us is that it has provided us with a road map to running the company. When my partner and I retire, we can pass on an instruction book. Anyone can walk in, look at it and say, “This is how it works.” It’s that black and white because we’re doing exactly what the manual says.”
