Trans World Alloys

"One of the best I have seen"

Those were the words of Graham Hendrick, one of QAS International's Lead Assessors, when he went to conduct the recent surveillance report on Trans World Alloys, a California based full service metals distributor, and key supplier of aerospace and commercial grade metallic raw materials.

Having first attained ISO9001 in 2002, as well as being AS9100 compliant, the company had really taken the Standard on board, and made it part of their process of continuing improvement. Graham said, "I walked through the door, and there was an immediate impression of efficiency, where everyone knew what they were doing. This was confirmed when I reviewed the system, which is well documented and maintained by Shelby Williams, Quality Assurance Manager, and Pete Farrell, Facilities Manager/IQA. They are both meticulous in the objective evidence produced, and are using the Standard in the right way. A full audit of the system was taken, and this was first class. They are a credit to their certification. I was so impressed that I made a point of speaking to the President, Sandy Shadrow, and congratulating him on his team. This was one of the best systems I have seen in operation -really excellent".

Trans World Alloys operates from 2 strategically located service centers, in California and Kansas, with sales offices in Texas and New York. Their product range includes aircraft titanium sheet and plate, aluminum, aircraft stainless steel, and nickel, and other high temperature alloys for use in aerospace and commercial applications. Their lines of titanium forged products are from domestic mill sources and are regularly stocked. The company supplies customers around the world, as it mission statement declares "Trans World Alloys is committed to providing our customers with competitively priced quality materials and reliable on-time delivery performance."

During more than 11 years' experience of auditing, Graham has seen all kinds of businesses, and has been required to fail some companies for non conformance to the ISO9001 Standard, but that certainly was not the case here. He concluded, "From the overall impression of Trans World Alloys' premises, as a methodical blue chip operation providing to the higher end range of the industry users, to the customers surveys which showed a high level of customer satisfaction, the outstanding factor was the meticulous attention to detail and the sense of purpose. It was a real pleasure to see the Standard applied so well".
