Another of IMSM’s satisfied customers, MDJ Light Brothers (SP) Ltd, has provided specialist waste recycling and waste management services in the UK for nearly 40 years. Operating from three sites in Sussex, a site in Northamptonshire and an office technology processing facility in Kent, the company offers a full range of capabilities for recycling, re-using and recovering ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and glass.
Fully licensed to process all 10 categories of waste electrical and electronic equipment, the company processes over 100,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous metals annually, in addition to hundreds of thousands of fridges, freezers, PC monitors and TVs.
Jonathan Light, Managing Director, explained that environmental matters are high on the business agenda and that obtaining ISO 14001 has helped the company to reap many benefits.
“ISO 14001 is recommended as a management process standard for companies like MDJ Light Brothers and is a requirement for conducting business. In addition, many customers require ISO certification, so having already secured ISO 9001:2000, following up with ISO14001 was a natural extension of this. We chose IMSM to take us through the process because they came highly recommended by another company and offered exceptional value for money.
Implementing ISO 14001 has helped us to control and manage the environmental aspects of our business. It also enables better planning and reporting in a systematic way. It requires development of better standards year on year, which makes business sense.
We have just passed our second annual audit, which is encouraging as it is often more challenging to remain certified than to obtain it in the first place. The standard also applies to our other site, which helps provide consistency across the business.”
As a result of implementing ISO 14001 through IMSM, MDJ Light Brothers have a more formalised and clearer management process and the regular audits help identify problems for resolution, as well as overall improvements. In addition, the company has formed an ISO committee and includes regular monthly updates at management meetings.
