One of IMSM’s recently ISO 9001 certified clients is HSP Plastics Ltd, a Havant-based company specialising in Plastic Fabrications and Machining Service Plastic Products to customers’ specifications. With over 50 years’ experience, HSP Plastics is an award-winning organisation with a wealth of material knowledge, technical skills and manufacturing techniques, enabling its 25 multi-skilled staff  to provide national and international customers with bespoke solutions, flexibility and manufacturing excellence. The company services giants such as British Aerospace, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Cadbury Schweppes, Virgin, 20th Century Fox, ESSO, Ministry of Defence and Abbey National, to name just a few.

Although publicly recognised as an Investor in People for over 15 years, having won numerous awards for its innovative practices in workforce development, there was increasing pressure from potential customers for the company to obtain ISO 9001, in particular from the aerospace and defence sectors. However, it did raise some prior concerns.

Neil Hudders, Managing Director explained, “Initially we shied away from pursuing certification because we thought it would be a horrendous process, particularly since we conduct business with such a broad spectrum of industries. Our apprehension was very much allayed during our first meeting with IMSM, who explained that the process would be a lot less complicated than we originally believed and, as predicted, this proved to be the case. We discovered that we were doing 90% of it already, so it was simply a case of implementing the other 10%.”

Neil said that obtaining ISO9001 certification has enabled them to approach higher calibre customers, both nationally and internationally, in addition to improving internal and external quality. “It drives us to becoming more proficient at what we do and improves traceability and systems. Without a doubt, customers’ perception is improved and we can use it as a marketing tool.”

HSP chose IMSM for their forthright, honest approach. “They knocked on the door and said that it would not cost us £30k and to allow them 15 minutes to explain. They delivered what they said they would do.”

In terms of savings and profits, Neil concluded by saying, “Although it is too early to monitor any savings or profits, we do anticipate making more money in the long run as a result of acquiring better quality customers who are more willing to pay sensible prices for our services. We have IMSM to thank for guiding us through the ISO certification process.”
