IMSM previously certified Molded Plastic Consultants, based in Shanty Bay, Ontario. Originally established in 1980, the company was purchased from its previous owner in 2006 by David Yeaman, PEng, Company President and Thomas Woegerer, PEng, VP of Engineering and Development. The company produces a range of products from auto fasteners, clips, gears, threaded components, housings and brackets, seals, to lighting, water filtration and insert molding, with services covering product development, in-house tooling and manufacturing-truly a one stop shop.
David explained the importance of re-instating ISO 9001, which had been allowed to expire. “It was imperative that we re-established ISO 9001 because we conduct a lot of automotive work and our customers require us to have up to date systems and ISO certification. In fact, most companies would refuse to do business with us if we did not have ISO certification. Nevertheless, irrespective of what our customers think, we see enormous value in it, because it covers the whole operation from our purchase and order systems, our customer surveys, right through to final product quality control and all the other facets of running of the business. We boast a long list of clients that rely upon us to do things right the first time and to do them very fast!”
David said that since IMSM had previously certified the company, it made sense to employ their services again. In addition, he had visited many other businesses locally that had used IMSM and that also added to his confidence level.
MPC’s highly successful business model ensures that the company keeps abreast of the latest technologies and utilises the very best equipment available to the industry. Product development, tooling, prototyping and manufacturing are performed in-house and, depending upon the economics involved, some production runs and tooling programs are handled by the company’s manufacturing partner in southern China.
In the two years since changing hands MPC has doubled in size, something that David attributes to being run by hands-on owner/operators, all of whom are dedicated and professional engineers, and, of course, its ISO 9001 certification.
“Not only have we been able to develop an impressive customer base, but ISO 9001 is essential for running the company efficiently. We distinguish ourselves from other companies by pushing our limits and IMSM recognized that, and were excited by the way in which we were operating. As a company grows, its systems can become outdated and as a result things start falling apart. When you add more employees and more customers, costly mistakes can be made, so you have to continue to develop your efficiency and systems. Although ISO 9001 involved some work to re-instate we were happy to do it because it was value-added work. Quite simply, if it doesn’t add value we don’t do it.”
