One of IMSM’s South African clients, Nordland (Pty) Ltd, is at the forefront of local manufacture and the industrial lighting market. Established in 1967 as an importer of luminaires from Europe, Gauteng-based Nordland is one of the last of the original companies who have the honour of manufacturing under the SABS Mark Holder Permit Scheme for lighting.
Working closely with the South African Bureau of Standards, all light fittings comply with, and are approved as complying with the relevant specifications. Nordland is a permit mark holder for their entire range of lighting for use in Potentially Explosive Areas and general use. The stainless steel fittings and floodlights are undergoing international IEC Ex approval and other ranges will follow suit. The stainless steel and glass fluorescent N50 has been tested by a UK test house, Epsilon and is ATEX compliant.
For these reasons, Nordland developed a Quality system in compliance with the permit requirements of its quality mark and ISO 9001.
Greg Marcia, Technical and Quality Manager said, “IMSM was chosen for this task because of its understanding of the company’s requirements and a willingness to assist and guide the organisation in meeting its Quality objectives. Achieving ISO 9001 has enabled us to consistently maintain our high quality standards and has inspired even greater commitment to quality throughout the company. Care has been taken with the design of the various light fitting ranges to ensure that they are sufficiently robust to meet the requirements of the mining and other industries in Africa, yet be internationally acceptable. We appreciate that our lens thickness is greater than light fittings from Europe, and therefore more expensive, but they are stronger, as proven in mining experience.”
Not only were IMSM impressed by Nordland’s commitment to quality, but also its admirable dedication to staff welfare and the encouragement given to invest in their own homes. “This gives a sense of achievement and security to a family. When a spirit of entrepreneurship is evident, assistance is given to allow the individual to start on their own with guaranteed contracts,” said Greg.
Greg continued, “A company’s strength lies in its staff and not being a large company where individuals are numbers, we are proud that some of our original staff are still with the company with responsible positions. We believe in skills’ training and most of the staff have the capability of assembling more than one product range.”
IMSM enjoyed working with a forward thinking company that can appreciate the prime importance of ISO 9001 in facilitating international trade, the security of its staff and the well being of the company in the global marketplace.
