QUEEN’S AWARD SUCCESS

Based in South East London, MSI Recruitment Ltd has been successfully trading since March 2002. Company owners Nick Simpson and James Parker have over 30 years’ combined experience in the recruitment industry and established the company using their IT, Telecommunications and Banking recruitment experience before branching out a year later into the Medical Locums and, more recently, the Nursing industry.

MSI Recruitment decided to go for ISO 14001 as it was a requirement for achieving the Queens Award, which the company has just achieved.  Once they had discussed their requirements with IMSM, they discovered that there were certain benefits to the company in having ISO 14001.

Stewart Roberts, Special Projects Manager said, “Our only concern about going for ISO 14001 was whether the award would be applicable to us as we are a small office.  On speaking to IMSM, they clearly explained that our situation was ideal for the size of the organisation and that there were clear advantages for us to implement ISO 14001. We chose IMSM as we had used them previously to complete our other two ISO certifications and we found the representatives and assessors made the process of completing the ISOs very smooth and easy to maintain within our organisation.  In addition, IMSM are always looking at other standards that can aid our business and keep us informed of changes in the standards at all times.”

Stewart explained how the company has benefited as a result: “We are now implementing a document management system to eliminate all paperwork from the office.  We are also looking at the environmental aspects of disposing of our photocopier toners, which in turn has improved health and safety procedures as well as making sure we are recycling our old toners safely.  We have also looked at our suppliers closely to make sure that they are complying with the standards set by the ISO 14001 and, in some cases, have taken on new products to reduce the impact on the environment.”

“The overall improvement we foresee for the business as a result of implementing ISO 14001 is that we can actively show our clients that we are showing consideration for the environment. Many of the international companies we use are asking to see this kind of certification when we tender to become preferred suppliers.”

The company currently employs 25 staff members, comprising 16 consultants, 3 directors and 6 administration staff and has an annual turnover in excess of £10m.  The bulk of the business is contract based but they also run a thriving Temp Nursing desk and a permanent recruitment base.  95% of their IT and Telecommunications’ business is placing contractors outside of the UK in Europe, USA, Australia and more recently Asia, winning prestigious contracts such as T-Mobile and Ericsson.

In addition to acquiring ISO 9001:2000, ISO 27001:2005 and ISO 14001, MSI has been awarded Investors in People, has become a member of the REC and ATSCo and has achieved the status of being listed in the Sunday Times FastTrack 100 listing as one of the top 100 growing companies in the UK.

Describing the advantages of having several certifications, Stewart continued, “Having all the awards has added a large amount of credibility to our company in terms of customer perception, as they can see that we are not only looking at the business but also the staff and the environment around us.  This also has transposed onto the staff who are being more conscientious about their actions and how they are treated in the workplace.”

Finally, in praise of IMSM, he concluded, “When we completed our ISO 27001:2005, IMSM decided to put us in their quarterly newsletter, which went out to all of their clients and was great advertising for our company. We find the service provided by IMSM very informative and they are always willing to help.  We would also recommend IMSM to others if the opportunity arose.”
